Biotech Resume Tips

A resume is as good as an advertisement for oneself. Therefore ensure that you market yourself well. It is your resume, so make it as professional as you can. A biotech resume must present the information quickly, clearly, and in a way that makes your experience relevant to the position in question. That means condensing your information down to its most powerful form.

In the high technology fields, including biotechnology, it is of utmost importance to convey in your resume clearly what skills you can bring to a potential employer in your resume.Preliminary Requirement :

• Research about your career alternatives and organizations of interest before starting your resume.
• Organize your thoughts and ideas into your resume.
• Look at other resume guides' biotech resume samples.
• Avoid using "I" throughout your resume.

Objective : A job objective informs the reader about the intent of the resume. Without a job objective, it is difficult to discuss the skills you have that will apply to the prospective job. For example

"To use my knowledge to better the environment and to obtain a position in environmental chemistry in the process."

Qualification Summary : Recommended for experienced professionals. This section should consist of a minimum of three, and preferably no more than ten, "bullet points", each describing an accomplishment in terms of results. For example, instead of "Implemented a trade match system", try "Implemented a trade match system which reduced processing time by over 50%, and resulted in the elimination of overtime expenses for the entire business unit, saving in excess of 10K per month."

Skills : An example of the Skills and Abilities section for a biotechnology research professional could read as follows:

• Proficient in HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, LC-NMR, Protein Purification and Characterization, Drug Metabolism Studies, NMR, GLP Requirements.
• Familiar with in vivo drug metabolism studies, pharmacokinetics, use of radioisotopes.

Other Skills : Most typically includes computer and language skills. May also include job specific skills of any sort:

• Computer skills: List languages, systems, and programs
• Language skills: Specify language and your level of proficiency

Experience : Highlight your accomplishments and achivements in your resume.

Explain :

• Full-time employment
• Work study
• ummer employment
• Internships

List :

• Job title
• Employer name and location (city and state)
• Dates of employment
• Active description of your responsibilities and accomplishments

For Example :

Lab Technician Chemistry Department, NMIMT Inorganic Research Participated in environmental study of New Mexico Participated in bauxite leaching project utilized wet chemical, electrochemical, AA and other 0spectrophotometric analyses Organic Research developed a specific ion exchange resin gained experience in IR, NMR, x-ray, and organic synthesis

Activities : You may want to list your significant student and community activities including organizations, clubs, student government, athletics, and professional affiliations. You may use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and accomplishmentsjust as you did in the Experience section.

Areas of Special Expertise or Profile : This is an optional section that can be included in the chemistry resume. If you decide to go with "Areas of Special Expertise", use bullet points. The Profile can be written in paragraph form (if it's five sentences or less) or in bullet point format.

Add Keywords : Use action verbs to describe job duties. Try to use Action Verbs when constructing your statements :
